Urban Nutcracker

Saturday, Dec 12 (2009) 7:30p
at John Hancock Hall, Boston, MA
Price: $20 - $55
Phone: (617) 524-3066
Age Suitability: All Ages

Anthony Williams's irreverent, multicultural retelling of the classic "Nutcracker" story has become a local holiday tradition. This colorful, high-energy interpretation by BalletRox and guests, including the dynamic Yoel Cassell, fuses ballet with hip-hop, tap, and swing, interlacing Tchaikovsky's romantic score with the jazzy grooves of Duke Ellington. -- Karen Campbell, Globe Correspondent

Urban Nutcracker

This high energy and skillful performance offers complicated and right-on timing choreography, solid dancing, and the best spirit Boston, or any city could offer--multicultural diversity, involvement of children, and the magic of Christmas. This isn't your routine Nutcracker--this is a community of dancers that embraces the energy of humanity--and energtic it is! Dancers of all levels, including excellent professionals, were included, making this a refreshing change from the snobbish, frosty, technical, and critical world of the arts in general. THIS is what art should be all about. This Nutcracker brings 100 people(performers and backstage) of all skills, ethnicities and ages together in dance that sizzles with energy, enthusiasm and generosity of spirit. Dances, music and costumes from many lands were woven in,in surprising and refreshing moments. Music went seamlessly from multicultural into familiar Nutcracker segments. Children performed magically. Please go see this show. You'll come away with a broadened view of dance. You'll admire Tony Williams' and Ballet Rox' creative genius. It was obvious the large and loudly clapping approving audience shared my approval.(I went the 13th at 1:30.) Smiles were everywhere--on the dancers' faces, in the audience. BRAVO,many kudos, and a big thank you.

Very disappointing and not worth the $$$

Though some fun concepts and ideas here, the level of the dancing was not worth the price of a professsional show. It was very embarassing to watch the male dancer struggle to 'lift' his parnter off the ground. It started off promising then went back to 'safe' territory. I was very disappointed and would not recommend this to anyone. If you are going to pay these prices, go see a professional production.
